What Make and Model Handgun Do I Buy for Personal Defense?
Let me make this clear; this article will NOT tell you which gun to buy. It will give you plenty to think about before you spend your hard earned money. OK, let me answer your first question right away; what gun do I carry for personal defense? Answer: Glock Model 36 or Glock Model 19. Now that we have this out of the way, let’s talk about you. Questions you must consider are:
How much can I afford?
Do I carry a revolver or semi-auto?
What caliber do I want to carry? (Please read a previous blog on this topic)
What size gun (full, compact, sub compact,)?
How much you can afford will steer you to the manufacturer. Remember one thing; just because the gun is expensive and is the one carried by the Los Angeles Police SWAT team does not mean it is the “best” for you. Glock, Smith&Wesson, Sig Sauer, Ruger, Kahr, Springfield, FN, Kimber are excellent gun manufacturers. I am not endorsing any one of these but they have outstanding reputations. There are other manufacturers with equal reputations, just too many to mention.
What size gun? The larger the gun the heavier the weight. However, there will be less recoil because of that weight. A larger GUN will usually carry more rounds. However, the larger the CALIBER the less rounds the gun will carry.
Confused? Hang in there. I am not finished.
What Model? The model of most guns is determined by the caliber. Referring to my personal choices for concealed carry, the Glock Model 36 fires a .45 caliber ACP round while the Glock Model 19 shoots the 9mm parabellum (9×19). The Glock 36 holds less rounds than the Glock 19 because the 45 ACP round is larger than the 9mm. What do you want: a bigger bullet with fewer rounds in the gun or a smaller bullet with more rounds? This is a personal decision.
